Karuturi asks $100 Million to Start Sugar Plantation in Ethiopia

(Bloomberg) — Karuturi Global Ltd., the world’s largest rose grower, is seeking $100 million from development banks to finance a sugar-cane plantation in southwestern Ethiopia, Chief Executive Officer Sai Ramakrishna Karuturi said. 

The Bangalore-based company leased 100,000 hectares (247,105 acres) in the Gambella region from Ethiopia’s government in 2008 to farm corn, rice, palm oil, sugar and other crops. It’s now growing rice and corn on 12,000 hectares “We believe we have reached that level of traction and scale that would be appropriate for a development financial institution to look at,” Karuturi said in a June 7 interview.

The Ethiopian supervision has clamped down on Internet-based voice-calling service, creation their use a rapist offence.

Ethiopia’s state-owned Internet use provider, a Ethiopian Telecommunication Corporation (Ethio-Telcom), has begun behaving deep-packet investigation of all Internet trade in a country. 

The country’s supervision recently ushered in new legislation that criminalises a use of services such as Skype, Google Talk and other forms of Internet phone calling.

The new law, that came into outcome on 24 May, creates use of Internet voice services punishable by large fines and adult to 15 years in prison.

The Committee to Protect Journalists and the Africa Media Initiative (AMI) called for the release of journalists being held under Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism laws and requested a review of those laws as they affect freedom of speech. 

CPJ board member Charlayne Hunter-Gault, CPJ Deputy Director Robert Mahoney and AMI board member Dele Olojede met Friday in Addis Ababa with Communications Minister Bereket Simon, a senior figure in the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. In a two-hour meeting, the delegation also expressed concern about continuing prosecutions of journalists, particularly under the 2009 anti-terrorism statute, which independent publishers and reporters say has a chilling effect on Ethiopia’s small private media sector.

For the past 18 years, I have studied the brain activity, psychology, and genetics of psychiatric patients and the brain scans of psychopathic serial killers. A few months ago, I was approached by a non-profit human rights organization to create a presentation on the mind of a dictator--an especially compelling issue in light of recent uprisings against autocrats in the Middle East and North Africa. 

After combing through literature on the world's worst dictators and combining it with my neuroscience research and that of others on psychopaths, I presented my theory in May at the Oslo Freedom Forum, an annual conference produced by the Human Rights Foundation. The following article is based on my speech, an attempt to look inside the minds of these elusive and powerful world players.

አልሸባብ ፕሬዚዳንት ኦባማንና ውጭ ጉዳይ ሚኒሰትሩዋን ለመግደል የሚያስችል መረጃ ለሚሰጡ ሁሉ ገንዘብ እንደሚከፍል አስታወቀ የሶማሊያ ታጣቂ ሀይል ይህን መልስ የሰጠው የባራክ ኦባማ አስተዳዳር የአልሸባብ መሪዎች ያሉበትን ለጠቆመ ከፍተኛ ገንዘብ እንደሚሰጥ ማስታወቁን ተከትሎ ነው።

የአልሸባብ የቆዩ መሪ የሆኑት ሼክ ሾንጎሌ እንደተናገሩት ፕሬዚዳንት ኦባን ለመግደል የሚያስችል በቂ መረጃ ለሚያመጣ ሰው 10 ግመሎችን ይሸልማሉ፤ በአንጻሩ ሂላር ክሊንተንን በተመለከተ ለሚመጣ መረጃ ደግሞ 10 ሴትና 10 አውራዶሮውችን እንደሚሰጥ አስታውቋል። የፕሬዚዳንት ኦባማ አስተዳደር የአልሸባብ መሪዎችን ለሚጠቁሙ 33 ሚሊዮን ዶላር መመደቡን ማስታወቁ ይታወሳል።

የፌደራሉ መንግስትና የሲዳማ ዞን በአዋሳ እጣ ፈንታ ላይ ውጥረት የበዛበት ውይይት እያካሄዱ ነው

የፌደራል መንግስቱ አዋሳን በስሩ ለማድረግ እቅድ እንዳለው ሲታወቅ፣ የሲዳማ ዞን በበኩሉ ድርጊቱን ይቃመዋል። በቅርቡ በተደረገው ውይይት ላይ አለመግባባት ተፈጥሮ እንደነበር፣ የሲዳማ ዞን ባለስልጣናትም የፌደራል መንግስቱ ባለስልጣናት የሚመሩትን ስብሰባ ረግጠው መውጣታቸውንና ጉዳዩን ከፌደራል መንግስት ባለስልጣናት እውቅና ውጭ እያካሄዱት ነው።

አዲሱ ውዝግብ የአዋሳን ህዝብ ትኩረት መያዙም ታውቋል። በ1994 ኣም በፌደራል መንግስትና በዞኑ መካከል በተፈጠረው አለመግባባት  ከ40 እስከ 100 የሚደርሱ የሲዳማ ተወላጆች መገደላቸው ይታወሳል። የመለስ መንግስት ከፍተኛ የህዝብ እልቂት ያስከተለውን የቆየ ችግር መልሶ በማምጣት ሌላ ችግር ለመፍጠር ለምን እንደተነሳሳ ግልጽ የሆነ ነገር የለም ይላሉ የአካባቢው ነዋሪዎች።

ለአባይ ግድብ ማሰሪያ ያለፈቃዳቸው ደሞዛቸው የተቆረጠባቸው እና ተቃውሞ ያሰሙ ኢትዮጵያውያን አስፈላጊው የማስተካከያ እርምጃ እንዲወሰድባቸው ተባለ

ስማቸው እንዳይጠቀስ የፈለጉ የደቡብ ተወላጆች  ለኢሳት እንደገለጡት ያለፈቀዳቸውን ለህዳሴ ግድብ ማሰሪያ  በሚል የተቆረጠው ገንዘብ እንዲመለስላቸው በመጠየቃቸው ነው አስፈላጊው እርምጃ እንዲወሰድባቸው የሚል ደብዳቤ የደረሳቸው። ” የህዳሴን ግድብ ገንዘብ አሰባሰብን ይመለከታል”   በሚል ርእስ በተጻፈው ደብዳቤ ላይ ለግድቡ አናዋጣም ባሉት ላይ አስፈላጊው የማስተካከያ እርምጃ የሚወሰደው ጸረ ልማት ሀይሎች ተብለው በመፈረጃቸው  ነው።

ድርጅቱ እንደገለጠው የኢትዮጵያ መንግስት የኢንትርኔት ተጠቃሚዎች ስማቸውን ሳይገልጡ የሚጠቀሙበትን እና እንዳይታዩ የታገዱ ድረገጾችን ለማየት የሚጠቅመውን ቶር ኔት ወርክ ዘግቷል። ሪፖርተርስ ዊዝ አውት ቦርደርስ  ማተሚያ ቤቶች አዲስ ያወጡትን ቅድመ ምርምራን የሚያጠናክረውን ውልም ተችቶአል።

ፓርላማው በቅርቡ አዲስ የወጣውን የቴሌኮሚኒኬሽን ህግ ማጽደቁ ይታወሳል። በአዲሱ ህግ ከየቴሌኮሚኒኬሸን መሳሪያዎች ጋር የተያያዙ ወንጀሎች  ከ10-15 ዓመታት በሚደርስ ጽኑ እሥራትና ከ100ሺ እስከ 150ሺ ብር የሚደርስ የገንዘብ መቀጮ የሚያስቀጣ ነው ተደንግጓል፡፡ የቴሌኮሚኒኬሸን አገልግሎት ከመስጠት ወንጀል ጋር ማለትም ሕጋዊ ንግድ ፈቃድ ሳይኖር የቴሌኮሚኒኬሸን አገልግሎት መስጠትም  ቅጣት ከሚያስከትሉት አንዱ መሆኑን ረቂቅ አዋጁ ያትታል።
